JFK to MetLife Stadium: getting to the World Cup 2026 Final
The 2026 World Cup Final is at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 19 July — about 25 miles and a state line from JFK. There is no direct train. Every realistic route runs through Manhattan or Secaucus Junction, and the ones that matter — NJ Transit's matchday rail and the fan buses — are sold in advance only and can run out.

The routes from JFK — and why you book them before you fly
MetLife Stadium sits in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, roughly 25 miles from JFK with the Hudson River in between. Every public-transport route crosses into Manhattan or over to Secaucus Junction: you ride the AirTrain out of the airport, reach one of those hubs, and take a matchday train, bus or coach the rest of the way. On a normal day that is simple. On 19 July, with a sell-out crowd, the pieces that matter sell out too.
The table compares the main ways to cover the JFK–MetLife trip on final day. Add generous buffer to every figure: gates open at 11 a.m. for a 3 p.m. kick-off, and security screening for a World Cup final is slow.
| Route from JFK | Time (one way) | Cost | Book ahead? |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirTrain → LIRR to Penn → NJ Transit rail via Secaucus | ~2 hours | $4.25 + LIRR ~$8–11 + $98 round-trip rail | Yes — app-only, 40k cap |
| AirTrain → subway to Manhattan → New York fan bus | ~2–2½ hours | $4.25 + $3.00 + $20 round-trip bus | Yes — buy in advance |
| AirTrain → transit to a hub → official NYNJ coach shuttle | ~2 hours | $4.25 + transit + coach fare | Yes — non-transferable |
| Private transfer or taxi, JFK to the stadium area | 45 min–2 hrs with traffic | Fixed price (transfer) or metered + surge | Transfer: yes |
The NJ Transit matchday rule that catches people out
The train is the fastest way in — about 35 minutes total from Manhattan's Penn Station, including a quick transfer at Secaucus Junction to the direct matchday shuttle — but NJ Transit has three World Cup rules that trip up first-time visitors. Miss any one of them and you will not be riding the rail.
- App only. Matchday rail tickets are sold exclusively through the NJ Transit mobile app. They are not sold at station windows or ticket machines, and not on the day of the match.
- Capped at 40,000. Each matchday has a hard limit of 40,000 round-trip rail tickets. For the final they go early — buy the moment your seat is confirmed.
- $98 round-trip, flat. The matchday rail fare is a flat $98 per person round-trip from any NJ Transit rail station (cut from an original $150). It is non-refundable, non-transferable, and you need a valid FIFA match ticket to buy one.
The train route, step by step
From Penn Station New York, take any NJ Transit train to Secaucus Junction, then transfer to the Meadowlands Rail Line shuttle that runs direct to the stadium on matchdays. From JFK you reach Penn Station by riding the AirTrain to Jamaica (just $4.25 this summer — the Port Authority halved the AirTrain fare through Labor Day 2026) and switching to the LIRR — about 20 minutes to Penn. The cheaper alternative is the subway (E or J/Z from Jamaica) into Manhattan, then the fan bus below.
Bus, coach and rideshare from Manhattan
If the rail cap fills, or you would rather start from Manhattan, two bus options and rideshare remain.
- New York fan bus — $20 round-trip. New York State cut the Manhattan-to-stadium bus fare from $80 to $20 for the tournament. Buy ahead; it is built for fans starting the day in the city.
- Official NYNJ Stadium Shuttle. A round-trip coach from four hubs — Midtown North, Midtown East, the Port Authority Bus Terminal and a New Jersey park-and-ride. Advance purchase, non-transferable, with accessible options.
- Uber and taxi. Rideshare drops off at the Meadowlands racetrack with a 1.3-mile (about 25-minute) walk to the gates, and fares and waits will be far higher than usual. A pre-booked private transfer with a fixed price avoids the surge, but not the traffic.
You cannot bring your luggage — not to the stadium, not onto the train
This is the detail that reshapes the whole trip if you are flying in on final day. MetLife Stadium runs a strict clear-bag policy for the World Cup: one clear plastic bag no larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, a small clutch, or a one-gallon freezer bag. Suitcases, backpacks of any kind and non-transparent bags are turned away at security — and there is no bag check or storage anywhere at the stadium.
The same rule applies to the official transport. You cannot board the NJ Transit Meadowlands Rail Line or the official stadium shuttle with a suitcase or large bag, even if it is only your overnight luggage. In practice, arriving at the final with your bags is not an option — you need somewhere to leave them first.
That is exactly what a hotel near JFK is for. Land, drop your bags at the hotel (or use its luggage hold if it is before check-in), and travel to MetLife with only a clear bag and your ticket. It also solves the other end of the day: the final kicks off at 3 p.m. and, with the trophy presentation, runs past 6 — you will not want to start hunting for a room in New Jersey afterward.
When to leave JFK on 19 July
Parking lots open at 10 a.m. and gates at 11 a.m. for the 3 p.m. kick-off. For a final, treat the published times as the earliest you would want to arrive, not the latest — expect long security lines and packed trains. Aim to be through the gates by early afternoon, which means leaving JFK by late morning.
The cleanest version of the day is to fly in the day before, sleep near JFK, leave your bags at the hotel on the 19th, and make the stadium run light and unhurried. Booking a fixed-price transfer, or your rail ticket, the moment your match seat is confirmed takes the last-minute scramble out of the biggest match of the tournament.
FAQ
How far is MetLife Stadium from JFK Airport?
About 25 miles, across the state line in East Rutherford, New Jersey. There is no direct train; every public route runs through Manhattan or Secaucus Junction, so allow around two hours door-to-door on final day.
What is the cheapest way from JFK to the World Cup final?
The AirTrain (just $4.25 with the summer half-price fare), the subway into Manhattan ($3.00) and the $20 round-trip New York fan bus is the lowest-cost route. The NJ Transit matchday rail is faster but a flat $98 round-trip.
Can I buy an NJ Transit train ticket to MetLife on the day of the final?
No. Matchday rail tickets are sold only through the NJ Transit mobile app, capped at 40,000 a day, and never sold at stations or on the day itself. Buy as soon as you have your match ticket.
Can I take my luggage to MetLife Stadium?
No. The strict clear-bag policy bans suitcases and backpacks, and there are no storage lockers at MetLife. Since official transit also bans large luggage, your only option is to drop your bags at a hotel near JFK before travelling to the match.
How early should I leave JFK for the 3 p.m. final?
Gates open at 11 a.m.; aim to be inside by early afternoon. With slow security and crowded trains, leave JFK by late morning — or, better, stay near the airport the night before and start fresh on the 19th.
Is a private transfer worth it for the final?
A fixed-price transfer avoids taxi surge pricing and the 1.3-mile rideshare walk. However, remember that a standard drop-off transfer cannot store your luggage during the game, so you still need to leave your bags at your hotel. It cannot beat the train on traffic, so leave early either way.
