MetLife Stadium bag policy for the World Cup Final: what you can bring (2026)

MetLife Stadium runs FIFA's strict clear-bag policy for the 19 July World Cup Final: one clear bag no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, one small clutch, and a single factory-sealed water bottle. Backpacks, suitcases and opaque bags are turned away at security, and there is no storage — so anything larger has to be left behind before you travel to the match.

What you can bring into MetLife for the final

FIFA sets its own rules for World Cup matches, and they override MetLife's normal policy. For the final, each ticket holder may carry one clear bag and one small clutch. The only things that get through outside that are medically necessary items and baby-care bags — allowed, but inspected at a separate medical lane at the gates rather than the standard entrance. Everything else you bring has to fit inside the clear bag.

Backpack, suitcase, any opaque bagNoRefused at security, not stored

What's banned — and won't be handed back

The banned list is longer than the allowed one, and the part that matters is what happens to a prohibited item: FIFA security confiscates it at the gate and does not return it, and there is no storage at the checkpoint. Turn up with the wrong bag and you either bin it or miss the match.

  • Backpacks of any kind — refused regardless of what's inside (medical and baby bags aside, via the medical lane).
  • Suitcases, and any non-transparent bag larger than the small clutch.
  • Outside food and drink, beyond the one sealed water bottle.
  • Reusable, refillable or empty water bottles, flasks and metal bottles (see the June 2026 change below).
  • Flagpoles, large banners, selfie sticks and professional cameras with detachable lenses.
  • Weapons, and anything FIFA security judges a risk.

The water-bottle rule changed in June 2026

This one catches people out. Until this summer, an empty transparent one-litre bottle was allowed through. On 4 June 2026 FIFA banned all reusable water bottles — including empty clear ones — at every World Cup venue in the USA and Canada.

What you can bring instead is one factory-sealed, soft-plastic disposable bottle of up to 20 ounces (590 ml); an opened or refillable bottle is taken at the gate. Here is the useful part: once you're through, hold onto that bottle — there are free water stations inside the security perimeter where you can refill it rather than buy another.

There's no bag storage at MetLife — or on the way there

MetLife has no bag check and no lockers for the final, and neither does the surrounding Meadowlands complex. If you arrive with anything bigger than a clear bag, there is nowhere on site to leave it.

The same limits follow you onto the official transport. You cannot board the NJ Transit matchday train or the official stadium shuttle with a suitcase or large bag either. So the problem isn't only the gate — it's the whole journey, from the moment you set out with your luggage.

Flying into JFK? Leave the luggage before you cross to New Jersey

If your flight lands at JFK and your hotel is nearby, plan the match-day timeline before you set off — and do not try to go from the airport straight to New Jersey with your luggage. You'll be turned back at the NJ Transit matchday train and the official shuttle, both of which ban large bags, and there is nowhere to leave one at the stadium. MetLife is 90 minutes or more from JFK, across Manhattan and two rivers — not a trip you want to make twice because you got stopped with a suitcase.

Go to your JFK hotel first, leave your suitcases at the front desk, and take only your clear bag for the trip to MetLife. Most airport hotels hold luggage free for guests, so you can drop bags even before check-in and collect them after the match.
